KUMO: Hoophouse
September - october 2018
クモ (kumo) is japanese for "spider”
Spiders have long and narrow legs that move mechanically differently compared to our human legs. Each leg pivots around their abdomen as if opening and closing a curtain. This project is a temporary greenhouse enclosure for herbs planted outside during the winter. The enclosure is to sit on top of a bed of soil of 4’ by 8’ (US) | 1.2m x 2.4m (Metric). Plants and the soil are accessible through three separate railed curtains, attached to a central pivot joint. Each entrance allows access to a different part of the soil bed. Only electrical conduit and heat shrink plastic was used to construct this structure.
This project was installed at the Edible Garden of Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, PA, United States between October 2018 and February 2019.
This project was a collaborative effort between: Victor Beyazit Eraslan, Steve Wang, Adam He, Melissa Thomas, Clover Chau.
